Unlike the rushed three-day route, an extra day allows you to pause at lesser-known gems: the labyrinthine alleys of the blue village of Aït Ben Haddou at golden hour, the Draa Valley's endless sea of date palms, and a leisurely morning exploring Merzouga village before the long return.

Your Itinerary
Marrakech → Aït Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Gorge
Depart Marrakech at dawn and climb the High Atlas via the legendary Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, pausing for panoramic views of the snow-dusted peaks. Descend into the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs and arrive at Aït Benhaddou in the warm afternoon light — a UNESCO World Heritage ksar whose ochre towers have stood since the 11th century. Continue to the cinema capital of Africa, Ouarzazate, before reaching the Dades Gorge for the night in a canyon-perched riad.
Dades Gorge → Todra Gorge → Draa Valley → Merzouga
Begin the day among the sculpted monkey fingers of Dades rock formations before heading east to the Todra Gorge — a cathedral of stone with walls soaring 300 metres above a cold clear river. After lunch in Tinghir, trace the ancient caravan route of the Draa Valley through a seemingly endless corridor of date palms, fortified granaries, and rose-coloured kasbahs. The landscape gradually surrenders to mineral plains until the colossal amber dunes of Erg Chebbi materialise from the horizon. Arrive at your luxury desert camp, mount your camel, and ride into the dunes for sunset.
Merzouga — Full Day in the Desert
Rise before dawn and climb a dune crest to watch the Sahara ignite in shades of rose, amber, and gold — one of the most breathtaking sunrises on earth. After a Berber breakfast at camp, the day is yours. Explore the dunes on foot, try sandboarding, visit the Gnawa musicians of Khamlia village, or discover a hidden desert oasis on a 4×4 excursion. In the evening, gather around a campfire as a musician plays the sintir beneath a sky ablaze with stars.
Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Erfoud → Marrakech
A final Saharan sunrise from the camp terrace before heading north through the vast Ziz Valley palm grove — one of the largest in the world. Stop in Erfoud to browse a fossil workshop (the region sits on ancient seabed), and continue through the Tafilalet oasis plain. As the Atlas Mountains reappear on the horizon, the road winds back up through Tinerhir and Ouarzazate, arriving in Marrakech by late evening with three nights of desert silence and a lifetime of memories.
