The most rewarding way to cross Morocco — five perfectly paced days that connect Fes and Marrakech through the country's most iconic landscapes. With an extra day compared to the 4-day version, you have time to slow down, take detours, and truly absorb the magic of the Sahara and the kasbah country.
Cross the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas via alpine Ifrane. Descend through the dramatic Ziz Gorge to Merzouga, where you trade your 4×4 for a camel and trek into the great dunes of Erg Chebbi at sunset. Sleep in a luxury desert camp under more stars than you've ever seen. With an extra day in the desert region, take a 4×4 excursion to Khamlia village and explore the black desert. Continue along the legendary Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through Todra and Dades Gorges, with proper time to walk into the canyons. Stop at the UNESCO ksar of Aït Benhaddou — film set of Gladiator and Game of Thrones — before crossing the High Atlas via Tizi n'Tichka pass into Marrakech.

Fes → Ifrane → Midelt → Merzouga
Across the Atlas to the Edge of the Sahara
Morning pickup from your Fes riad. Head south through the rolling foothills of the Middle Atlas. First stop: Ifrane — a charming alpine town with red-roofed chalets and a famous stone lion sculpture, often called the "Switzerland of Morocco." Continue through ancient cedar forests where Barbary macaques roam roadside. Cross Midelt's high plateau between the Middle and High Atlas ranges, then enjoy a lunch break before the dramatic descent through the spectacular Ziz Gorge and its endless palmery corridor. Arrive Merzouga in the late afternoon as the great dunes of Erg Chebbi flush gold and amber at dusk. Check into a guesthouse at the foot of the dunes for the evening.
Merzouga — Desert Excursion & Camel Trek
Sahara Immersion & a Night Under the Stars
A full day to immerse yourself in the magic of the desert. Morning 4×4 excursion through the surrounding Sahara landscapes — visit Khamlia village to hear traditional Gnawa music, see the nomadic Berber families who still live among the dunes, and explore the dramatic black desert and salt flats. Lunch at a Berber tent before returning to Merzouga to relax. In late afternoon, mount your camels for a 90-minute trek deep into the great dunes of Erg Chebbi, watching the sunset paint the sand from camelback. Arrive at your luxury desert camp as the sky turns violet and a thousand stars emerge. Dinner served around a fire with traditional Berber music — a memory that stays for life.
Merzouga → Todra Gorge → Dades Valley
Sunrise & the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs
Wake before dawn to climb the great dune behind your camp for the Sahara sunrise — one of the most transcendent experiences on earth. Watch the desert turn from violet to amber as the sun rises over Algeria. Camel back to where your 4×4 is waiting. Drive through Rissani — Morocco's old caravan capital and Sunday market town — before heading west along the legendary Route des Kasbahs. Stop at Todra Gorge, where sheer canyon walls rise 300m on either side of a shallow palm-lined river — time to walk into the gorge with your guide. Continue to the rose-red Dades Valley with its dramatic switchback roads and bizarre rock formations known as "Monkey Fingers." Sunset at the Dades viewpoint. Overnight in a kasbah hotel above the gorge.
Dades → Skoura → Ouarzazate → Aït Benhaddou
Valley of Roses, Hollywood of Africa & UNESCO Kasbah
After breakfast, drive through the Valley of Roses (famous for the spring rose harvest and its rosewater products) and the Skoura palm grove with its scattered kasbahs. Visit Kasbah Amerhidil — the largest kasbah in Morocco. Continue to Ouarzazate, the "Hollywood of Africa" where Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones were filmed. Visit Kasbah Taourirt and (optional) the Atlas Film Studios. In the afternoon, arrive at Aït Benhaddou — the magnificent UNESCO fortified ksar of pisé earth towers. Walk through the labyrinth of mud-brick buildings with your guide and climb to the top for panoramic views over the valley. Overnight in a kasbah guesthouse facing Aït Benhaddou — magical at night when the ksar is gently illuminated.

Over the High Atlas to the Red City
Last morning to enjoy Aït Benhaddou in the soft golden light — early morning is the best time for photos with virtually no crowds. Begin the journey north, climbing the High Atlas via the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m) with sweeping views across mountain ranges and Berber villages clinging to the slopes. Stop at a Berber argan oil cooperative — see how women still extract the precious oil by hand. Descend to the ochre plains and arrive in Marrakech in the early afternoon. Drop-off at your riad in the medina with a head full of stories and dust still on your shoes — perfect timing to start exploring the Red City.
